Smartsheet adds AI agents that run recurring status reports on their own, but doesn't say who approves their changes

AI AutomationAI Implementation

On November 4, at its ENGAGE 2026 conference, Smartsheet announced new AI agents aimed at what it calls "execution drift," the slow slide of work off track. According to the release, three agents are "available today":

  • Agentic Workflows turn a plain-language request, such as a weekly project summary or a check on risks and dependencies, into a recurring task that "runs on its own and delivers results to the right people."
  • Creation Agent "turns a plain-language goal into a working project, with sheets, dashboards, reports and automations built in minutes."
  • Data Quality Agent "reviews sheets and flags issues by severity, on demand or on a schedule."

Smartsheet says agents work "using live project data and existing permissions." It also lists native connections to HubSpot, Workday, ServiceNow and Microsoft Dynamics 365.

The release is written for large IT and security teams. It doesn't mention small businesses, give pricing, or say which plans include these agents. It also doesn't say whether a person confirms an agent's changes before they're saved.

What it means for an SMB

  • Start with a read-only job. A recurring status summary is a safer first test than an agent that builds or edits sheets.
  • Check your plan and cost with Smartsheet before you count on any of this.
  • Ask who approves changes. Our AI approval matrix shows how to decide which actions an agent may take alone.
  • Review the first few reports against the real project status before you rely on them.
